National Ice Cream Sundae Day
National Ice Cream Sundae Day
Have you ever had trouble deciding between Chocolate with Hidden Cauliflower and Vanilla with Hidden Zucchini? Or Strawberry with Hidden Carrot and Cotton Candy with Hidden Beet? Us too. Which is why we often default to an ice cream sundae – multiple flavors, whipped cream and toppings galore. You can’t go wrong.
To celebrate our love of all things ice cream, we’re giving you the inside scoop on how the sundae came to be. We’ve also leaked some of our favorite Peekaboo Ice Cream sundae recipes – you’ll thank us later.
An Ode to the Ice Cream Sundae
Lore says that the name ‘Sundae’ was created because of the ‘Blue Laws’ which stated that ice cream sodas could not be sold on Sundays because they were deemed too “frilly.” In spite of the laws, two cities lay claim to creating the original ice cream sundae – Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and Ithaca, New York.
Rumor has it that in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, a local business owner poured melted chocolate over scoops of vanilla ice cream at the request of a visitor, later adding additional toppings and started serving the concoction every Sunday. Over in New York, an owner of a pharmacy decided to add cherry syrup and a candied cherry to each serving of ice cream. When a local reverend dropped by, he later named the creation the “Cherry Sunday” in honor of the day and his most holy company. To create some separation of church and state, the ice cream dessert went from ‘Sunday’ to ‘sundae’. So now you know.
While the debate on who really gets credit for inventing the sundae may go one forever, we’ll be over here enjoying our favorite Peekaboo Ice Cream (with hidden veggies) sundae with molten chocolate, whipped cream, and a sweet cherry on top.
In honor of National Ice Cream Sundae day, we’ve put together some Peekaboo Ice Cream Sundae recipes you won’t be able to resist.
Exclusive Peekaboo Ice Cream Sundae Recipes
As ice cream fanatics, we don’t discriminate. We love Peekaboo Ice Cream in all shapes and sizes. However, our personal favorite is a heaping ice cream sundae with loads of flavors, toppings, and extras. We’ve put together a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home!
The Classic Sundae Funday
This five-scooper sundae will rock your world. Can’t decide on a Peekaboo Ice Cream flavor? Use them all! You get a scoop and you get a scoop! *Oprah voice*
One scoop of chocolate (with hidden cauliflower), one scoop of mint chip (with hidden spinach), one scoop of strawberry (with hidden carrots), one scoop of vanilla (with hidden zucchini), and one scoop of cotton candy (with hidden beets).
For the full effect –– add melted hot fudge, chopped nuts (GO NUTS!), and a sweet maraschino cherry on top. Dig in!
I Want S’more
Too hot for a full-blown campfire with S’mores? No problem! This S’mores sundae does just the trick.
Use either Peekaboo Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Cream (or both) as your sundae base. Top with melted marshmallow fluff, hot fudge, and graham cracker crumbs. If you’re feeling fancy, add a torched marshmallow as garnish. Close your eyes, take a bite, and transport back to your glory girl-scout days.
Grill and Chill Banana Split
Everyone loves a good ol’ banana split, but how about grilled bananas in their split? We’ve upgraded the traditional banana split and that s*** is bananas –– b-a-n-a-n-a-s!
Slice bananas vertically (still in their peel), drizzle with honey and lay cut-side facing up on a heated grill grate. Close the grill cover until the banana slices are caramelized around the edges and fruit begins to pull away from the skin. Carefully remove the bananas from their peel and place on a dessert plate. Top each banana with your favorite Peekaboo Ice Cream flavor. Add some caramel syrup and a few dollops of whip cream and serve immediately. Prepare for the warm and sweet flavor blast.
Chocoholics Anonymous
Too much chocolate? Said no one ever. This triple packed chocolate sundae is a love affair waiting to happen. Nutella lovers beware!
Start with Peekaboo Chocolate Ice Cream with Hidden Cauliflower, and top with melted hazelnut spread, chopped hazelnuts, and a few vanilla wafers as garnish. It’s pretty much a giant Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolate explosion. You’re welcome.
