A Note from Jessica

Peekaboo! Today is a banner day for us here at Peekaboo as we launch our blog and the next phase of the Peekaboo story – giving you a peek into all the sweetness.

To start, my name is Jessica Levison and I’m the founder of Peekaboo Ice Cream. I’m so excited to share my thoughts and tips on everything I know about ice cream, what it’s like to run an ice cream empire, how to be a cool lady boss and most importantly how to trick your kids into doing things they don’t want to do: a.k.a. eating their veggies.

The Backstory

But before we get into all that, I want to take a minute to explain a little about how we got here. Ice cream has always been my thing, my passion, my raison d’etre. I began experimenting with small-batch ice cream back in 2006 – I was working as a lawyer for Legal Aid during the day and tapping into ice cream making at nights as my creative outlet. I was having fun creating unexpected flavors like orange marmalade and sourcing chocolate, coffee and other ingredients from local purveyors. After sharing the sweet results with friends and co-workers, the rave reviews started pouring in.

So much so that after two years of experiments, I decided to dive headfirst into the world of ice cream. I quit my day job to attend University of Pennsylvania’s Ice Cream Short Course and opened a shop, Serendipity Creamery and Yogurt Café in my hometown of Surfside, in Miami, Florida. That was 2008.

The shop is my baby, well one of them…. All of our ice cream and sorbet is made from scratch and in small batches. We even make the marshmallows, cookie dough, peanut butter cups and everything else that we fold into our ice cream. We use organic ingredients whenever possible and we support local farms and artisans like Paradise Farms, Panther Coffee and J. Wakefield Brewing for many of our signature flavors.

Fast forward a few years and I had other babies. This time, they were cute little humans who really appreciated my job as ice cream maker. As they got older, conversations with my kids went a little something like this:

me: “eat your veggies”
them: “no”
me: “eat your veggies”
them: “no”
me: “fine, here’s some ice cream.”

How Peekaboo Came About

After one too many of these conversations, I thought, wouldn’t it be rad if veggies tasted like ice cream? Obviously, the answer to that question is a unanimous and resounding: YES! So, I started adding veggies to my kids’ ice cream in increasing amounts to see if they would notice. They didn’t.

After lots of tinkering and even more taste testing (which was never an issue for me or my kids), Peekaboo Ice Cream was born. Created to be equally as indulgent as regular ice cream, Peekaboo has hidden veggies that you can’t see or taste but are just as powerful in delivering your dose of veggie vitamins and minerals.

I’m proud to say that Peekaboo is a new kind of frozen dessert that is so satisfyingly delicious, you’ll never guess that beets, cauliflower, spinach, and other veggies are hiding just behind the creamy flavor. Eating your veggies has never tasted so good.

The Flavors

Without further ado, here’s our lineup—available online and select grocery stores across the country.

Chocolate with Hidden Cauliflower
Chocolate is a classic flavor and one of my biggest priorities to perfect. It’s rich, it’s creamy and it’s so chocolatey that you won’t even realize the cauliflower is there.

Vanilla with Hidden Zucchini
Believe it or not, this is my favorite flavor. If you grew up loving a classic Vanilla Bean flavor, this one is for you. And look closely, are those flecks vanilla bean or zucchini peel? Your kids will never know.

Strawberry with Hidden Carrot
I started with the classics. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. While strawberries (and berries in general) are already full of antioxidants great for hair, skin, and nails (I did you a solid in the beauty category, ladies). Did you know that carrots can even help you grow longer eyelashes? You’ll thank me later.

Mint Chip with Hidden Spinach
Refreshingly cool, deliciously creamy, all with a side of everyone’s favorite, spinach. Before you start rolling your eyes, just try it, you’ll love it when you taste it. The coordinating shades of mint chip and leafy green just made sense, it was almost too obvious, especially since Peekaboo doesn’t use artificial colorings!

Cotton Candy with Hidden Beets
Cotton Candy reminds me of days at the fair when I was a kid, and I mean c’mon who doesn’t love that perfectly pink color? Beets have a sweet flavor and a vivid color that make this a match made in heaven.

xx Jessica
