Coffee Gets Sweeter on National Coffee Day

For so many people (including me) coffee is a ritual—a morning wake-up call, an afternoon pick-me-up, and an after dinner treat to enjoy with dessert. And on National Coffee Day, that ritual gets a whole lot sweeter. This year, to celebrate, we’re pairing our favorite cuppa joe with ice cream. But seriously though, isn’t National Coffee Day every morning?

Coffee and Ice Cream

Coffee and ice cream is the perfect match for a delicious treat – warm and cold, bitter and sweet. There two super easy recipes that we love for pairing coffee and ice cream, borrowing from European traditions. The first is a German eiskaffee meaning simply ice cream and coffee and the second is affogato, the tantalizing Italian dessert. The main difference between the two is the temperature of the coffee. Both are easy to throw together and deeply satisfying.

German eiskaffee

2 cups cold coffee
1/4 cup evaporated milk
2 to 3 teaspoons sugar
1 cup Peekaboo Vanilla with Hidden Zucchini

1. In a glass or metal bowl, mix together cold coffee, evaporated milk, and sugar to taste until sugar dissolves completely. Chill thoroughly.

2. Place 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream in two tall glasses. Pour the chilled coffee-milk-sugar mixture over it and top with a dollop of whipped cream! Serve with a cold spoon and enjoy!

Italian Affogato

2 small scoops Peekaboo Vanilla with Hidden Zucchini or Chocolate with Hidden Cauliflower
2 cups hot coffee from your favorite brand

1. Put one scoop of ice cream into a small glass or bowl and pour ½ cup hot coffee over it.

2. Serve immediately, stirring the ice cream into the hot coffee, so that it melts slightly. Serve and smile!

Both recipes are for two servings, because life is sweeter when sharing!

Fun Coffee Fact

Did you know that the word “coffee” comes from the Arabic word for “wine”? The word Qahwah became kahveh in Turkish, and then koffie in Dutch, which is where we got the English word coffee. From water to wine, centuries later, America is still buzzed over coffee!
